RJ Mitte, the actor who became widely recognized for portraying Walter White Jr. on AMC’s acclaimed crime drama Breaking Bad, has died at the age of 34.

The actor’s death was reported on Monday, October 12, with representatives confirming the news to Deadline. Mitte reportedly died in Brownsville, Texas, where authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding his passing.

According to TMZ, information obtained from a local official indicates that Mitte died by suicide. However, an official cause of death has not yet been publicly confirmed.

Mitte rose to prominence through his performance as Walter “Flynn” White Jr., the teenage son of Walter White, played by Bryan Cranston, and Skyler White, portrayed by Anna Gunn. He appeared throughout the show’s five-season run, from 2008 until its conclusion in 2013.

His character became an important part of the award-winning series, particularly as the White family struggled with the consequences of Walter’s increasingly dangerous criminal activities. Mitte’s performance brought emotional depth to the story and helped establish him as a recognizable face in television.

Born in Jackson, Mississippi, in August 1992, Mitte was diagnosed with cerebral palsy during childhood. His personal experience with the condition created a connection to his Breaking Bad character, who also lived with cerebral palsy.

Although the series introduced him to an international audience, Mitte continued pursuing opportunities across television and film after its conclusion.

His acting credits included Switched at Birth, The Guardians of Justice, The Oak Room, The Recall, and Triumph. He also expanded his involvement in the entertainment industry through producing and other creative projects.

Outside Hollywood, Mitte dedicated considerable attention to promoting opportunities for individuals with disabilities. He worked with organizations including United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children’s, using his public profile to encourage greater accessibility and representation.

His advocacy extended directly into the entertainment business, where he spoke about the importance of casting performers with disabilities and creating opportunities that reflected their experiences.

Mitte’s career also demonstrated that performers with disabilities could take on a wide range of characters rather than being limited to roles defined by their conditions.

In the days preceding his death, the actor remained connected to the project that first brought him widespread recognition. During a recent podcast appearance, he discussed his early auditions, memories from the Breaking Bad production and his thoughts about what might have happened to Walter White Jr. following the series finale.

News of his passing has prompted expressions of grief from viewers who followed his career, particularly those who remembered his performance in one of television’s most celebrated dramas.

For many audiences, Mitte will remain closely associated with Walter White Jr., but his contributions stretched well beyond that defining role.

He leaves behind a body of work in television and film, along with an advocacy legacy centered on making the entertainment industry more inclusive.

RJ Mitte was 34 years old.
